Michael Jackson covers the beers of the world but has a particular passion for the specialty brews of Belgium. “In half a dozen nations, the ‘wine of the country’ is beer,” he asserts. “The most wine-like beers are brewed in Belgium”. Such delights as Lambics, White Beers, Red Beers and Trappist Specialties were largely unknown outside Belgium, and not always well understood in their own country until Jackson “discovered”, documented, and explained them in his 1977 World Guide to Beer. Among his seven books on beer, The Great Beers of Belgium is the only one devoted to a single country.
